{"id":503,"date":"2013-06-02T10:03:26","date_gmt":"2013-06-02T00:03:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ssarch.com.au\/?p=503"},"modified":"2013-07-03T08:35:26","modified_gmt":"2013-07-02T22:35:26","slug":"mals-place","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/ssarch.com.au\/wordpress\/?p=503","title":{"rendered":"MAL&#8217;S PLACE"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/ssarch.com.au\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Mals-ENE-Aspect.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-509\" alt=\"Mal's-ENE-Aspect\" src=\"http:\/\/ssarch.com.au\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Mals-ENE-Aspect-300x115.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"115\" srcset=\"http:\/\/ssarch.com.au\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Mals-ENE-Aspect-300x115.jpg 300w, http:\/\/ssarch.com.au\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Mals-ENE-Aspect-1024x393.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/ssarch.com.au\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Mals-ENE-Aspect.jpg 2022w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Mal&#8217;s Place<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0This small remote home for a single man sought to achieve the stillness and ascetics of a ryokan traditional Japanese journey&#8217;s end resting place.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ssarch.com.au\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Mals-NW-Aspect.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Mal's-NW-Aspect\" src=\"http:\/\/ssarch.com.au\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Mals-NW-Aspect-300x153.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"153\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0The construction team was made up of architecture students from the University of Tasmania architecture school as a summer break project.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0A local field stone walled raised platform was constructed in the clearing in the bush and a terrace paved with fire resistant terra-cotta tiles.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0This platform became the workshop for the carpentry of the joined timber frame.\u00a0 The timber was produced from small diameter Celery Top Pine waste logs taken from a nearby property and site milled with a chainsaw mill to break down the logs and a Lewis mill to square off to a smooth sawn square finish.\u00a0 The logs were racked on site for a year under cover to air dry.<\/p>\n<p>The Joinery techniques followed the traditional Japanese Joinery styles for use in &#8216;green&#8217; Cedar type timbers subject to along the grain shrinkage but stable across the grain.\u00a0 The through mortices allowed for the splice\u00a0 joints to be tight fitting through the posts without risk of shrinkage away and to tighten longways as the timbers pulled up as they shrink longways along the beams.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/ssarch.com.au\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Mals-place-Joinery-assembl.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Mal's-place-Joinery-assembl\" src=\"http:\/\/ssarch.com.au\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Mals-place-Joinery-assembl-300x194.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"194\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile a large local field stone spine wall was constructed along the long central access of the building to top sill beam height.\u00a0 90 tones of stone and mortar went into the wall construction which became a work of art incorporating special &#8216;brother&#8217; stones of it&#8217;s makers, small niches and light fittings as it emerged from the terrace.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/ssarch.com.au\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Mals-place-site.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Mal's-place-site\" src=\"http:\/\/ssarch.com.au\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Mals-place-site-300x190.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"190\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A special tree burnt out in the recent bush fires\u00a0 was identified on the property by the owner and this was selected and trimmed and joined at the ends to at as the central <a style=\"text-decoration:none; color: #333;\" href=\"https:\/\/gigglesgobblesandgulps.com\/buy-avodart-online\/\">https:\/\/gigglesgobblesandgulps.com\/buy-avodart-online\/<\/a> &#8216;house spirit&#8217; post and was driven into it&#8217;s position by the owner on completion of the house as an act of handover and possession and continuity of the place not the building to be carried on through the life of the new building and beyond.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0A grid of leveling tiles the same dimensions as the columns was set up on the terrace to take the column and beam grid.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0The frame raising used the owner and all their friends and most of the wider architectural school to put it all up in a day.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0The roof frame made up of a series of 5 large section roof beams., the ceiling boards were curved over the roof beams and fixed down.\u00a0 The hardwood purlins fixed down and then the roofing iron bent over to shape.\u00a0 Outriggers were fabricated and set to the required curve for the eaves and to support the half round gutter elements.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/ssarch.com.au\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Mals-Place-roof-detail-4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Mal's-Place-roof-detail-4\" src=\"http:\/\/ssarch.com.au\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Mals-Place-roof-detail-4-300x195.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"195\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The pre made timber floor panels were dropped in and some hinged to access the sub floor storage bays.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0The corner panel of the main living area was set on a lifting mechanism to raise itself 450mm above floor level (with the 450mm deep storage bay below) to act as a dining table when lifted.\u00a0 A small hibachi heater was set below the table and the doors could be opened to the snow to allow dinner alfresco to the bush, sky and weather.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/ssarch.com.au\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Mals-Entry-Door.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Mal's-Entry-Door\" src=\"http:\/\/ssarch.com.au\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Mals-Entry-Door-225x300.jpg\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A bath was sunken into the terrace and surrounded by a field of stones collected from around the property , the state and from the owner&#8217;s collection from around the world.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ssarch.com.au\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Mals-Bathroom.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Mal's-Bathroom\" src=\"http:\/\/ssarch.com.au\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Mals-Bathroom-225x300.jpg\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0\u00a0 Mal&#8217;s Place \u00a0This small remote home for a single man sought to achieve the stillness and ascetics of a ryokan traditional Japanese journey&#8217;s end resting place. \u00a0The construction team was made up of architecture students from the University of Tasmania architecture school as a summer break project. \u00a0A local field stone walled raised platform [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":506,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[5],"tags":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"http:\/\/ssarch.com.au\/wordpress\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/503"}],"collection":[{"href":"http:\/\/ssarch.com.au\/wordpress\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"http:\/\/ssarch.com.au\/wordpress\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/ssarch.com.au\/wordpress\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/ssarch.com.au\/wordpress\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=503"}],"version-history":[{"count":5,"href":"http:\/\/ssarch.com.au\/wordpress\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/503\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":546,"href":"http:\/\/ssarch.com.au\/wordpress\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/503\/revisions\/546"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/ssarch.com.au\/wordpress\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/media\/506"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"http:\/\/ssarch.com.au\/wordpress\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=503"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/ssarch.com.au\/wordpress\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=503"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/ssarch.com.au\/wordpress\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=503"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
